Michael was a voracious reader with a restless, brilliant mind.

Michael James Quattrini lived an expansive, original, and deeply thoughtful life from the day he was born in Valdosta, Georgia, on Christmas Day in 1952, to his passing on October 20, 2026, with his wife Kimberley at his side, right where she had been for 39 years.

Raised across the American South and moving as far as Canada during a wandering childhood, shaped by the rhythm of growing up in a military family led by his father, Michael was a voracious reader with a restless, brilliant mind. It was during these early childhood years that he discovered the game of chess, sparking an obsessive, lifelong passion that saw him develop into a recognized chess master across the communities where he played. After losing his mother, Ruth, when he was seventeen, he spent the memorable summer of 1969 riding horses bareback while staying with family, carrying the kind of quiet, adventurous grit that shaped everything he did moving forward.

In 1972, he began studying at the University of Montevallo before transferring to the University of Alabama, where he studied mathematics and cemented a lifelong devotion to Crimson Tide football. Naturally brilliant and generous with his knowledge, Michael acted as an informal tutor and mentor to his circle, even teaching his friend Doug McCullough trigonometry. Fiercely entrepreneurial and creative, he co-ran a house-painting company with close friend Frank Emory, served as editor of an independent campus magazine, and sold computers during the dawn of personal computing. A true hippie at heart who was free-thinking, independent, and deeply thoughtful, Michael held a profound, personal faith; he saw God in everything and everywhere around him. He later served in the United States Air Force and the National Guard, a formative chapter that left a lasting impression on him.

Michael’s mastery of the logic of chess led directly to a 40-year career as a senior computer programmer. In the tech world, he forged some of his deepest friendships with people who shared his love for sharp logic, cunning intellect, and quick humor. Michael was a rare breed: equal parts Captain Kirk’s charm and Spock’s intellect, paired with a mischievous wit, a love for science fiction, and an appetite for lively, good-natured debate. He was effortlessly funny, quick, and deeply fond of the written word.

Above all the code, books, and sharp humor, Michael’s greatest devotion was to his wife, Kimberley. Meeting as colleagues, he spent two patient years making his interest clear before asking Kim to drive him home on a particularly rainy afternoon, to which she flatly refused. Eventually, after mistakenly forgetting to turn down an invitation and admitting she was not busy, Kim found herself on a first date at the zoo. That date led quickly to marriage and a honeymoon in Disney World. For 39 years, he called her "Love Dove" and greeted her every single day with "H.A." (happy anniversary), firm in his belief that every day together was a milestone to celebrate. Their bond was forged through reciprocal devotion: Michael cared for Kim with total tenderness through her battles with cancer, and when his own health faced serious challenges in his later years, Kim was by his side with unwavering grace and steadfast care to the very end.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth Naomi Quattrini (Dees) and Joseph James Quattrini; his stepmother, Joyce Quattrini (East); his sister, Brenda Quattrini; and his brother, Joseph Quattrini.

Michael’s legacy is carried forward by his beloved wife, Kimberley Quattrini; his daughters, Jessica Leigh Quattrini and Amber Leigh Quattrini; his son-in-law, Nathan Blatcher; and his cherished granddaughters, Ella and Isabelle, who carry forward his spirit: Ella continuing his passion over the chessboard, and Isabelle reflecting his mischievous humor, quick wit, and spark.

He is also remembered with deep love by his godson, John Bender; his nephew, Chris Harris, and wife, Jackie; along with their children, Samuel, Jordan, Joshua, Madisen, and Alexander.

Michael loved to write, crafting poetry throughout his life with honesty, quiet reflection, and fierce hope. One of his poems reads:

Crumpled pieces with bitter endings
Man and army from on to on
Its ranks I fear will never fall apart and leave
And continue taking lands my mind treads upon...
But look up
Dust mist on the horizon
They haven’t won yet
Wait for me
